Casssandra was able to look at the students’ PLaSP and determine the ways in which she could link these goals with lesson goals. For example, with AN, his PLaSP identified that he needed to work on his expressive language skills. Cassandra decided to focus on AN’s ability to speak in an audible, clear and confident way. She incorporated into the lessons opportunities for AN to speak in front of the group and created a non-threatening environment in which he would be more likely to speak. As a result, AN participated in class discussions and his confidence grew.

None of the students with whom Cassandra worked uses hearing technology other than hearing aids and cochlears. However, given that Cassandra herself wears hearing aids, and that a hearing aid was causing her trouble while she was on placement, Cassandra was able to trouble shoot the problem effectively. We also discussed the use of other devices that might be useful in the classroom.

Cassandra continually demonstrated an understanding and knowledge of the needs of students with hearing impairment that was based on her current studies. She was confident and successful when working with individual students and with a whole class, adapting her communication modes and styles according to the students’ needs. Cassandra was able to justify her actions and decisions based on research and knowledge of how students who have a hearing impairment learn.
I am confident that Cassandra has already achieved Graduate level. She works professionally with colleagues, sharing her own knowledge and continually learning from others, adapting her practice when necessary. Cassandra was able to communicate with all of the students and staff, including those who are sign dependent and those with English as an additional language or dialect.
She worked hard to achieve her goals and ensured that the lessons she prepared met the learning goals of the students. Her lessons were differentiated to meet the varying needs of the students and the formative assessments that were built into the lessons helped her to adjust the lesson delivery as needed. The students’ behaviour during her lessons showed that they were prepared for learning and engaged. Cassandra was able to evaluate the effectiveness of her lessons and identify areas for improvement for the future. Feedback from colleagues and students was very positive.
Do you consider that the Student is at risk of failing to achieve “Graduate level” by the end of their overall Practicum experience? No
