Leonie demonstrated an excellent understanding of communication and language development for a diverse range of student needs. Individual lesson goals were well chosen and adjustments specific to each student’s needs were considered and implemented. Leonie evaluated each task in context of how the students performed toward full achievement of the goals and was able to do this during lessons and adapt strategies (including delivery -receptive sign/speech) or activities accordingly.
Informal evaluation, recording and ongoing adjustment was observed. Student interest, choice-making and ownership of learning as well as fatigue were factors that Leonie also considered and adapted for within lessons. Leonie used information from another agency to support a student’s learning by providing a gross motor activity immediately before commencement of his lesson.

Leonie was observed to use, monitor and troubleshoot each student’s hearing devices proficiently. Appropriate information and advice was provided to parents eg when it was difficult to achieve a good seal (of hearing aid mould to ear) and aura-gel was applied, Leonie discussed this with the parent in preparation for an upcoming Audiology appointment. All students were very young, however opportunities for students to work toward independence with their devices were provided and modelled to parents. Leonie considered student choice eg she asked her student whether she could reinsert his device and then he turned the side of his head toward her to allow this.

One of Leonie’s main strengths is her ability to review and amend her own teaching based on knowledge acquired in current studies as well as in response to student reaction and need. She initiated the implementation of activities, applying her professional learning from within the practicum and discussed how these would need further modification eg explicit teaching for a younger student.
Leonie confidently engaged with class teachers and education assistants and demonstrated that she could convey her specialist knowledge in a manner that was conducive to their learning and maximize the likelihood of them easily implementing her suggestions.
Leonie planned learning programs specific to the current needs of her students, using highly motivating activities and games. She demonstrated excellent skills in engaging her students in their lessons and making adjustments to suit their needs eg physical positioning and allowing for sensory regulation whilst maintaining the focus on listening and speaking/signing. Incidental additional teaching was observed when she followed the child’s lead and incorporated their interests toward the achievement of their goals. Leonie participated expertly and confidently when called upon to do so in parts of the modelled lessons.
Leonie was professional and punctual. Her excellent communication (including Auslan) skills allowed immediate connection with all of the students. This rapport was also demonstrated with parents and was conducive to the optimization of learning overall.
I have very much enjoyed working with Leonie and wish her all the very best for the remainder of her studies and future in the field.
Do you consider that the Student is at risk of failing to achieve “Graduate level” by the end of their overall Practicum experience? No
