Hillal used speech, language and listening skill assessments and the students existing Personal Learning and Support Plan (PLASP) goals to establish initial lesson goals. At the end of each lesson taught he reflected on student progress and then reassessed the goals for the next lesson. He refined the wording of the lesson goals so that he was better able to identify student behaviours indicating lesson goals had been achieved. Hillal's more specific goal writing provided more specific focus to his lessons over time.

Hillal routinely checked students' hearing aids and wireless communication devices to ensure they were in good working order. He demonstrated sound understanding and practices when conducting the Ling test with his focus student. He changed batteries, used a stethoclip to monitor sound quality and synced hearing aids and processors to WCDs.

Before commencing practicum days, Hillal familiarised himself with the needs of a range of students by reading their PLASPs so that he could create appropriate lessons for the students. He also participated in discussions with all members of the Itinerant team about the diverse range of students with whom he worked. Hillal provided classroom teachers with feedback regarding student comprehension, communication needs, use of technology and suggestions for suitable adjustments. Hillal demonstrated an understanding of the importance of using engaging and age appropriate resources, even creating some of his own. By reflecting on his lessons, he was also better able to select suitable resources from the extensive itinerant library .
Hillal used his recorded session to help him identify areas in which he could better manage young student's behavior, improve the pace of his teaching and develop his skills as a teacher of the Deaf; e.g. using acoustic highlighting, monitoring speech and presenting language models through listening only when appropriate.
Hillal incorporated the knowledge he gained from professional discussions into his lessons throughout the practicum. He asked insightful questions continually to help clarify his understanding of student needs and the various aspects of itinerant teaching.
Hillal demonstrated insights and empathy for students and staff in his approach to this practicum. His professional, open and friendly attitude was evident and appreciated in all of the schools and classrooms he attended. He valued input from all staff members and he himself was regarded as a positive addition to the team for the short time spent with us.
Do you consider that the Student is at risk of failing to achieve “Graduate level” by the end of their overall Practicum experience? No
